Motion Analytica

2020-today
Venezia - Udine
Data Scientist Team Leader
When I began my experience at Motion Analytica I was the first employee and I worked with other external collaborators mainly. In the first three years, the team has constantly grown and now I am at the head of the "technical team". My tasks have evolved as well and they now include:
  • Project cost estimate and delivery timeline design.
  • Cohordinate and support the team both technically and personally.
  • Results validation.
  • Technical product development.
  • Partner (Vodafone, Italy) facing.
  • Customer interaction management, from requirement collection to product delivery.
  • Discussion of final results with customers.
  • Design of algorithms to get insights of people and things in motion from telco and social media data.
  • Visual insights design.
The only customer I can publicly name is ISTAT, the Italian National Statistics Institute, but we worked with many main public institutions and main Italian public-transport agencies.

Motion Analytica

2018-2020
Udine
Data Scientist
  • Customer interaction management, from requirement collection to product delivery.
  • Project timeline design.
  • Design and implementation of algorithms to get insights of people and things in motion from mobile phone network data.
  • Visual insights design and implementation.
  • Discussion of final results with the customer.

Gruppo PAM

2015-2018
Venezia
Customer Analyst
  • Customers analysis and classification based on their purchasing behaviour derived from the study of million of loyalty-card transactions. The purpose of these analysis is getting customer insights, understanding market trends and promo performance.
  • Coding of PAM-Panorama targeting engine with the support of a consulting company. The engine is a loyalty management software which analyses PAM-Panorama customer habits to assign to each one customized offers. Engine maintenance and upgrading according to business requirements after the consulting cooperation was expired.
During the collaboration period I have worked with the consultants, designing and developing significant pieces of the tool. After that I have personally managed the tool maintenance and improvement by developing new features following business requirements.
  • Padua Statistical Science Department graduate thesis co-supervisor. The thesis purpose is estimating coupon redemption rates using different data mining models such as random forests and neural networks.

Part Time

Fondazione Studi Universitari di Vicenza

2015-2015
Vicenza
External Collaborator
Cheese quality analysis. Data had been collected with NIS (Near Infrared Spectroscopy) technology. The collaboration objective is comparing cheese classification from NIS data and chemical data: the former can be collected without cutting the cheese while the latter needs the wheels to be broken into small pieces thus NIS data collection is far cheaper than chemical one.
I carried out some statistical analysis to compare the NIS and chemical data. The results shown chemical data provided better classification but the discrimination based on NIS data was good enough.

Education

Master Degree in Statistical Science, IT Curricula

Statistical Science Department, University of Padua

2013 - 2016

Grade: 110/110 e Lode

This course of study aims at providing students with an advanced level of education for highly qualified work in specific areas such as data mining. The most important courses are advanced likelihood theory, data mining and computational statistics that is IT methods to perform statistical tasks via simulation.

Graduate Thesis

Title
IRT Model Estimation Via Penalized Likelihood
Supervisor
prof. Nicola Sartori
Description
This thesis is about IRT (Item Response Theory) 1PL and 2PL models, in particular, exploring new estimation methods based on penalized likelihood function with the purpose of improving estimates convergence. With this work, my supervisor and I have shown IRT model estimation via L1-penalized likelihood seems useful to select which coefficients are really significant, even if 2PL models do not belong to glms.

Three-year Degree in Statistics and IT

Statistical Science Department, University of Padua

2010 - 2013

Grade: 110/110 e Lode

Basic theoretical preparation and an adequate command of general scientific methods and contents, in addition to the acquisition of specific professional know-how such as descriptive statistics and the likelihood theory.

Undergraduate Thesis

Title
A Monte Carlo Study of the Properties of a Non-Parametric Estimator for the Area Under the ROC-Curve
Supervisor
prof. Monica Chiogna
Description
Area Under ROC Curve non-parametric estimator properties study via Monte Carlo simulation. The estimator is based on the K nearest neighbor method. This thesis purpose is estimator unbiasedness validation and estimator variance approximation. With this work, my supervisor and I have shown the proposed non-parametric estimator is unbiased and normally distributed. We also proposed a bootstrap approach to estimate its variance.

Undergraduate Diploma as IT Expert

ITIS Carlo Zuccante, Mestre-Venice

2005 - 2010

Grade: 100/100

Undergraduate IT school. Main school subject were Mathematics (from simple Algebra to Calculus), Probabilities and Statistics (from simple probabilities problems to likelihood theory) and IT (from imperative programming to OOP and DB designing and querying).

Extra & case-studies

Motion Analytica case studies

Motion Analytica
2018-now
I actively contributed to most of the case studies listed in the page.

"Mobilità in Italia" and "Dati Frequentazioni nelle Stazioni" contribution

FSResearch, Vodafone Business, Motion Analytica
2023
My team and I contributed creating the algorithms needed to process and inference TelCo raw data and providing the aggregated results presented by FSResearch team.
The two reports should be publicly available from the following links:

"Istat and Vodafone business: tourism statistics with mobile network data" contribution

ISTAT, Vodafone Business, Motion Analytica
2022
From our previous works in 2020 and the co-published posters (ISTAT, Vodafone and Motion Analytica) we published a paper on how mobile network data can be used to provide tourism statistics.
I saved a copy here.

MIMS "Mobilità e logistica sostenibili" contribution

FSResearchCentre, Ferservizi, Vodafone Italia, Motion Analytica
2022
In 2022 my team and I developed the Telco analyses used by FSResearchCentre to publish the first chapetr "Mobilità e logistica sostenibili: pubblicato il documento strategico del Mims"
I saved a copy here.

Two posters with ISTAT

ISTAT, Motion Analytica and Vodafone
2021
In 2020 ISTAT, Motion Analytica and Vodafone worked together on two projects aimed at studying tourism behaviour and mobility behaviour using telco data and I was among the team.
In 2021 we wrote two posters, presented during the XIV Italian national statistics conference, where we summed up our work:
  • In the tourism poster, we used telco data to monitor tourism performance, analysing the city of Roma and the Rimini province. The original poster has been published here while I have saved a local copy here.
  • In the mobility poster, we used telco data to monitor people mobility pattern, analysing the Lombardia region. The original poster has been published here while I have saved a local copy here.

"Bernardo Colombo" exhibition web editor

Statistics Science Department of Padua University
2014
In 2014 Padua Statistical Science Department arranged an exhibition titled "Bernardo Colombo: a human lesson of a scientific journey" to celebrate its founder, Bernardo Colombo, after his death.
Following the organizer requirements I designed and developed the web pages related to the exhibition.
